15 X 12 Master Bedroom
In our Layout Guides series, you'll find layout solutions for rooms of all shapes and sizes. We show you different ways to lay out a space—because we're big believers in working with what you've got! Today, we're exploring two different 12×15 bedroom layouts.
The Space: A 12×15 Main Bedroom
The Challenge: Squeezing all of the essential bedroom furniture into this smaller room size without it feeling cramped.
With the average main bedroom size coming in around 200-300 square feet, this 12×15 bedroom sits at a smaller 180 square feet. It's not an impossibly small space, but it does require a bit more intentionality in the layout to make the most of it.
When dreaming up bedroom design ideas, the size of bed you choose plays a big role in how you layout your space and what else can fit in it. Does your dream bedroom have a king size bed? Own it and make other bedroom design decisions around that. Don't mind a queen size bed? You'll have a little more flexibility in your bedroom designs. So landing on that detail is a great place to start when designing a smaller bedroom.
From there, you can start exploring layout options and overall bedroom designs! To get your creative juices flowing, we've designed two 12×15 bedroom layouts for this main bedroom to show you how you can arrange a space of this size to suit your needs.

Layout Idea #1: A Queen Bed and Seating Area
With this bedroom layout, we started with a queen size bed to allow a bit of extra floor space in the rest of the bedroom. There's just enough space to tuck the bed and two nightstands along the shorter wall, in front of the windows, leaving plenty of space on the other half of the room to create one of those cozy bedroom seating areas.
This layout creates a functional but relaxing space that doesn't feel cramped. (There's even space at the end of the bed to roll out a yoga mat so you can sneak in some quiet, meditative moments!)
Create a relaxing sitting area:
The main reason we chose this layout was to have the space to create a sitting area. Since this is the main bedroom in this home, we wanted to add a slight sense of luxury with an extra place to sit and relax. We love the idea of enjoying a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine in this relaxing space. The martini table next to the chair gives you a place to set your drink, while the floor mirror adds style (it "frames up" this vignette) while also adding a practical element to the bedroom.

Don't be afraid to cover up some of your windows:
When you have tall and long windows, like this bedroom does, your instinct might be to keep furniture away from them. You don't want to block natural light, after all! But that leaves you with only one viable layout for this bedroom. Since these windows are so tall, you can get away with blocking some of them without losing the benefit of natural light.
We opted for a taller headboard to make this look like even more of an intentional design choice. (A platform bed without a headboard or a short headboard would almost look like you're apologizing for covering any of the windows!) The solid headboard and curtains help frame the windows—making the whole arrangement look polished while keeping the windows functional.
Choose matching bedside tables:
The trio of windows combined with the bed centered along the windows calls for matching nightstands and table lamps. This gives the whole setup an appealing look of symmetry and balance.
Rather than traditional nightstands, we actually opted for console tables, which are a bit taller than the average nightstand and also not as deep. This saves some floor space, since they're thinner, while still giving the look of a nightstand. With the height, these tables can also serve as a mini desk for writing cards or letters. (We placed a stool underneath one for just that purpose!) The rustic wood finish and marble top add a lovely stylistic touch to the bedroom, and there's still a single drawer for bedside storage.

Add additional storage options:
This isn't a huge bedroom, so it's great to sneak in extra bedroom storage where you can. Rather than a traditional dresser, we opted for a display cabinet for storing not only folded clothes but also linens, books, and baskets for other essentials. You can get away with this, because this bedroom's closet is quite large and there's likely space to hang extra clothing or even show extra folded clothing. The upholstered bench at the foot of the bed also offers additional hidden storage options.

Layout Idea #2: Upgrade to a King Bed
If you prefer a king size bed in your main bedroom, this is the layout for you. It offers plenty of space for a king bed, two nightstands, and a dresser without the room feeling cramped. However, some people may feel like this is too small of a space for such a large bed. But pulling this off is all about choosing the right bed frame. There are so many different types of bed frames, but we opted for a lower profile style to save space and keep it from overpowering the space. (However, there's still plenty of visual interest with the ebony and caning finish!)
Don't overfill the space:
When you put a king bed in this size of room, you want to make sure you don't overfill the room and make it feel crowded. While this 12×15 bedroom layout is full, with large bedroom essentials throughout, we didn't add additional furniture. This keeps the room uncluttered. As a result, there's plenty of space to navigate around the bed and walk around the room, with additional open space for getting ready.

Balance out the size of the bed:
King size beds are large—so it's important to balance out the proportions with larger nightstands. These nightstands frame in the bed and at 32 inches wide are substantial enough to offer that sense of balance. They also offer plenty of storage space—both the hidden storage in the two drawers and the surface areas on the top and lower shelf for lighting, baskets, boxes, blankets, and more.
Create a "getting ready" space:
This layout offers plenty of space for a large dresser, giving ample room for folded clothing storage. The mirror above the dresser adds a touch of practicality (and style!) so you can do your getting ready right at your dresser, using the top as a vanity. The bench next to the dresser offers a place to set while you put on your shoes—or even a place to set out your clothing the night before! It also simply adds some visual contrast and texture to this side of the room.
